Zytek crashes out of second place
For the second race running the Barazi-Epsilon team has been a denied a podium place following an accident. As at Barcelona, Michael Vergers was at the wheel when his Zytek 07S crashed at Monza's famous Parabolica curve. At the time, having completed 116 laps of the 173-lap race, Michael was in a strong second place in the LMP2 class.
The team had been running well since taking advantage of an early safety car period to make a splash-and-dash pit stop that was originally planned to take place towards the end of the race. Prior to Michael's drive, sportscar newcomer, Fernando Rees had taken over from team owner Juan Barazi for the second stint and was immediately quick. "I am having to get the feel of working in endurance racing. It's quite different," he says, observing how far he has come since Friday's first practice session. He was soon on the pace this afternoon and recorded the car's fastest lap at 1m 39.382.
A second Zytek 07S, that of new team Trading Performance ran steadily for around two thirds of the race. Unfortunately, damage to the rear suspension caused eventual retirement from the race.
Three other cars powered by the Zytek ZG348 engine took part in the race with the WR of Stephane and Philippe Salini and Patrice Roussel eventually dropping out with falling fuel pressure. Despite clutch problems, both of the fast developing Embassy WF01s looked to be heading for a finish in this their second only race. That of Jonny Kane and Joey Foster briefly ran as high as third in class and was fifth when, with Joey at the wheel, an unexplained fault brought the car to a halt. The other Embassy, driven by Warren Hughes and Mario Haberfeld suffered a number of minor problems but continued on to give the new make its first finish.
