Teams line up after qualifying for 1,000km of the Hungaroring
Following this morning's qualifying session, Ginetta-Zytek 09SBs have qualified sixth and seventh overall for the 1,000km of the Hungaroring with reigning LMP2 champion team Quifel-ASM second in class. Olivier Pla, in the 3.4-litre, Portuguese entered car that he shares with Miguel Amaral, recorded a fastest lap time of 1m 35.586s putting him just one place behind the 4.5-litre LMP1 Ginetta-Zytek driven by Greg Mansell. Greg, son of former World Champion, Nigel, set a time of 1m 35.441s.
The weather at the tight and twisting Hungarian track is particularly hot today and, in such conditions, tyre wear will be critical. Front-runners such as the Ginetta-Zyteks will also have to contend with heavy traffic through out the whole of the 1,000km Le Mans Series encounter.
With such a scenario, the three Ginetta-Zytek teams, Quifel-ASM, Beechdean Mansell and Team Bruichladdich - which scored a podium place at the last LMS round - are optimistic of a successful outcome. "We are hoping for a podium place in both the LMP1 and LMP2 classes," said Zytek Motorsport Managing Director Trevor Foster.
Olivier was his usual competitive self this morning while Greg, who shares the driving duties with his brother Leo, briefly held overall pole position during the early stages of the qualifying session. He was running on harder tyres than most of the field, a fact that he hopes will be to the team's advantage as the race unfolds. Third fastest of the 09SBs was the Team Bruichladdich LMP2 car of Karim Ojjeh, Tim Greaves and Thor-Christian Ebbesvik. The team experienced a disruptive time in practice yesterday but Thor-Christian still recorded a time of 1m 37.256s to take seventh in class
The 229-lap, 1,000km of the Hungaroring starts this afternoon at 4.00pm local time.
