GP2 veteran Leal announces ELMS campaign

GP2 and Formula Renault 3.5 podium finisher Julian Leal will enter the European Le Mans Series in 2016.

Leal, 25, has released a statement announcing that he will drive the LMP2-class BR01 car for SMP Racing over the six-round ELMS season.

"I am very thankful to SMP for putting their trust in me," Leal said.

"I want to also thank my sponsors Nikoil, Omega Energy and Ingenieria de Vias and I hope to get many good results and bring many victories for Colombia."

Leal is the third most-experienced driver in GP2 history, having recorded 102 starts over his five seasons in the category.

He scored two podiums with Racing Engineering in 2013 and two with Carlin in 2014, finishing a career-best 10th overall in the latter year - which also saw him test Caterham's Formula 1 car at Silverstone.

Leal left GP2 with three rounds to go in 2015 and was 14th in the standings at the end of the season.

SMP's BR01 prototype scored three podiums in a developmental ELMS campaign last year, at the hands of  Mikhail Aleshin, Kirill Ladygin, Anton Ladygin and Viktor Shaitar.

The team was not present on the official ELMS entry list released last month, but sources have confirmed it will indeed compete in the category again.
