Abt driver Martin Tomczyk starting from first grid row at Zandvoort
Qualifying for the ninth round of the DTM (Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters) could hardly have been more exciting: Abt driver Martin Tomczyk was beaten by merely five thousands of a second and he will be starting from second place on the grid for tomorrow's penultimate round of the season. Mattias Ekström, who won the race at Zandvoort last year, will be starting from fourth place with his Abt-Audi TT-R. Reigning champion Laurent Aiello will start catching up from 14th position. The race will be starting on Sunday at 14.00 h, ZDF is broadcasting live.
Quotes after qualifying
Martin Tomczyk (Super Pole, 1.35.341 min., 2nd place):
"With three makes on the first three places, it surely will be an exciting race tomorrow. My TT-R was perfect and I am very satisfied with my lap in Super-Pole. It only could have been five thousandths of a second faster..."
Mattias Ekström (Super Pole, 1.35.354 min., 4th place):
"Last year, I won the race here at Zandvoort and back then, I also started fourth -- that's probably all I have to say. My goal is clear."
Christian Abt (Super Pole, 1.36.773 min., 10th place):
"My lap was okay, I didn't take too many risks. I once lost a lot of time while locking up under braking after I got on the sandy part of the track. But Zandvoort is one of my favourite tracks, starting tenth in the race, anything is possible."
Karl Wendlinger (1.35.933 min., 12th place):
"I am absolutely satisfied. After free practice, I have improved another tenth of a second, I was faster than Laurent (Aiello) and Bernd Schneider. We have found a very good set-up for the race, so I am optimistic."
Laurent Aiello (1.36.004 min., 14th place):
"With this position, I am anything but happy, because I had expected a lot more. But after the interruption, I didn't achieve a perfect lap anymore. And in the DTM, two tenths less or more decide about being in Super Pole or being 14th. Now, I am in the same row as Bernd (Schneider). Let's wait and see how far we can catch up."
Peter Terting (1.37.373 min., 21st place):
"Initially, I was pushing too hard and I spun, then nothing worked anymore. Now, I will have a good night's sleep about it and I will be playing it very cool in the race tomorrow."
Hans-Jürgen Abt (team director): "A strong performance by Martin (Tomczyk), who has shown his speed once more. Laurent (Aiello) will have to fight in the race, but we all know that he can. We have always been contenders for victory at Zandvoort, and so we will be tomorrow."
