Audi driver Martin Tomczyk in the Volkswagen Race Touareg
Wolfsburg - Sand and mud instead of hot tarmac: Audi driver Martin Tomczyk swapped his Audi A4 DTM for a Volkswagen Race Touareg from the Dakar Rally for the first time. After brief instructions from Volkswagen factory driver Dieter Depping Martin Tomczyk bravely put the pedal to the metal at an offroad area near the Nurburgring.
"It's incredible how fast the Race Touareg can be driven in rough terrain. At the wheel you immediately feel that you're sitting in a thorough-bred rally vehicle," marvelled the DTM star from Rosenheim, Bavaria. "The test drive was huge fun and I'm already looking forward to the next opportunity." Martin Tomczyk will have it on 16 August: At the Red Bull X-Fighters freestyle motocross competition in Wuppertal he will pilot the 280-hp rally prototype again.
ADAC Volkswagen Polo Cup
Alexander Rambow clinches pole with commanding best time
Alexander Rambow clinched the top grid position in the qualifying for the seventh round of the ADAC Volkswagen Polo Cup at the Nurburgring. With a commanding lead of more than three tenths of a second the 19-year-old relegated his immediate rivals to the following places: second went to the Swede Andreas Simonsen ahead of Elia Erhart from Rottenbach and Polo Cup leader Shane Williams (South Africa). As the best contender in the rookie classification, the Peruvian Ignacio Espinosa finished seventh.
"At the Nurburgring the line has got to perfectly fit in every turn if you want to be quick. My lap was perfect," Rambow commented on his first pole position in the current season. For the runner-up in the overall classification, the objective is clear: "Of course I want to win the race." Aiming for the winner's cup as well is Andreas Simonsen: "Position two on the Nurburgring grid is on the inside - that's a good starting base for the first turn," said the 18-year-old from Goteborg.
At his Polo Cup debut Volkswagen factory driver Dieter Depping finished the qualifying in 18th place. "I expected the competition in the Polo Cup to be extremely fierce. Now I'm looking forward to the duels in the race," said Depping. Most recently, the all-rounder from Lower Saxony clinched third place at the Central Europe Rally and successfully took the wheel during the new Scirocco's racing debut at the 24-Hour Race at the Nurburgring.
