Spielberg DTM: Green beats Felix da Costa to pole by 0.002s
Audi driver Jamie Green denied BMW's Antonio Felix da Costa in a closely-fought qualifying for the second race of the DTM round at Spielberg.
Adrien Tambay, the leading Audi of yesterday's qualifying, was the first driver to dip below 1m23s at the start of the session, but his 1m22.910s lap wouldn't remain the benchmark for long.
Instead, it was Felix da Costa heading the field at the halfway mark, with a time of 1m22.734s - and only Green within a tenth of the Portuguese driver.
With less than three minutes to go, that time would be surpassed as well, albeit by Felix da Costa himself, the BMW man posting a marginal improvement of 1m22.682s.
But that would not be enough as, just a minute later, Green moved past the Portuguese driver to the tune of 0.002s.
Felix da Costa had a chance to respond, but came up a few hundredths short, settling for second.
It was third for Timo Glock, fourth for Maxime Martin and fifth for Edoardo Mortara, who posted an identical time to Augusto Farfus in sixth.
Bruno Spengler, Tom Blomqvist and Mike Rockenfeller were seventh, eighth and ninth, all within two tenths of pole.
Saturday poleman Marco Wittmann appeared to a shot at retaking the top spot for BMW in his final lap, as he posted a session-best S1, but the German scrapped his lap, subsequently complaining of being held up by the Audi of Rockenfeller.
It was a torturous showing for Mercedes, the top of its eight drivers - Robert Wickens - only 15th.
Championship leader Paul di Resta, having briefly dipped into the gravel during his first run, was 24th and last, 0.64s down on Green.
