Off the line, front row starters Green and Felix da Costa appeared to get a marginally better getaway than their rivals - but, as Felix da Costa challenged Green into Turn 1 and ran wide over the kerbs, he lost speed, falling prey to Glock at Remus.

The ex-Formula 1 driver then reeled in Green in no time and pulled off another Turn 2 pass on the second lap, easing past the Briton with DRS.

Green would not get an immediate chance to respond as his Audi stablemate Nico Muller was punted off by Robert Wickens at Wurth Kurve, coming to a halt in the barriers and bringing out a safety car.

That proved beneficial for Glock, the BMW driver nailing the restart to immediately pull away from Green as the Briton again was hassled by Felix da Costa.

And again, it did not pan out for the Portuguese, with Green holding off Felix da Costa into Rauch and allowing Edoardo Mortara, Augusto Farfus and Maxime Martin to pass the Portuguese driver through the next few corners.

By that point, the gap between Glock and Green was up to two seconds, but the Briton managed to prevent the lead from growing further before the mandatory pitstops begun.

Glock was among the first takers, pitting on Lap 15 to emerge in clear air - and while Green ramped up the pace for this next few laps, his decision to pit later, on Lap 19, did not alter the status quo.

With the gap between the duo slowly but surely increasing over the next few laps, Lap 25 saw the introduction of the slow zone in sector two after a collision between two other frontrunners.

Felix da Costa, having climbed back up the order by stopping early, had passed Mortara out of Schlosshold and tried to close the door on the Italian into Rauch - which resulted in Mortara punting the Portuguese off and himself getting beached in the gravel.

As such, the position was inherited by Farfus - only for Mattias Ekstrom to then emerge ahead of the Brazilian, in third place, by stopping on Lap 28.

With the Swede on fresher tyres, Green eventually surrendered the spot without a fight to allow his fellow Audi driver a shot at Glock.

However, Ekstrom could only get the gap down to 2.2s at the chequered flag.

Green took third, well ahead of BMW quartet Farfus, Martin, Tom Blomqvist and Marco Wittmann, with Mike Rockenfeller, Bruno Spengler and Timo Scheider making up the top 10.

It was another miserable day for Mercedes, which became the first DTM manufacturer in 2016 to take no points out of a race.

Gary Paffett, admittedly, came close, challenging Scheider for P10 in the final stages, but was forced out wide and dropped down the order.
