Abt Sportsline brings Lupo Cup Champion Peter Terting into the DTM
The championship winning team is complete: Peter Terting, from Kempten, will drive an Abt-Audi TT-R during the 2003 DTM (Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters) season and is the new team colleague of champion Laurent Aiello, Christian Abt, Mattias Ekström, Martin Tomczyk and Karl Wendlinger. The Volkswagen concern's junior driver support programme has paid off yet again with the signing of the Allgäu youngster who has just turned 19: Peter Terting won the 2002 ADAC VW Lupo Cup and jumps directly into the DTM.
"A dream has come true for me, I can hardly believe it all yet", says Peter Terting. The youngster, born in 1984, is just completing his car mechanics apprenticeship in the Abt Sportsline tuning department. "I work everyday next door to the motorsport workshops and had always hoped that I would at sometime be a team member", added the 1998 German kart champion.
However, Terting's jump into Europe's most important touring car series was not made on dreams alone: As reward for winning the ADAC VW Lupo Cup title, whose cars are prepared exclusively by Abt Sportsline, he received a test in a DTM car -- and made a lasting impression. "Peter was immediately quick and performed faultlessly", reported team director Hans-Jürgen Abt. As a result, the young talent received a second test, completed 600 flawlessly quick kilometres in Spain and therefore taking his chance to jump into the team that won the 2002 DTM title with Laurent Aiello.
"In the past we have often made very good experiences by not buying in big names", explained Hans-Jürgen Abt. Only two years ago, he signed Martin Tomczyk, a 19-year old driver from Rosenheim, who, within a very short period, returned the favour with excellent performances in the high class DTM field. "Obviously we don't expect any wonders from our new driver in his debut year. However, whoever saw Peter Terting battling wheel to wheel in Lupo Cup races knows that he's really good."
Peter Terting approaches his new duties just as relaxed as he does ambitiously. "Of course I want to justify the confidence shown in me and show my abilities as soon as possible. The VW Lupo Cup is therefore a very good school for young racing drivers and in addition I know that I can completely rely on the support of my team colleagues."
