Mercedes, Audi and Opel were testing at the Paul Ricard circuit in France this weekend and Swiss driver Marcel Fassler topped the time sheets for AMG Mercedes, just faster than former F1 driver Jean Alesi. In the Warsteiner backed CLK Fassler was 0.044secs ahead of fellow AMG runner Alesi on Sunday afternoon.

"It's a good feeling to be faster than Jean," said Fassler. "The new car gives me confidence, but I think my time will be beaten later in the week because the track will get more rubber on it. Generally, it has been a great test for me."

The Abt Sportsline Audi of Lauren Aiello was third fastest, three tenths slower than the Mercedes. "It's promising," said Aiello. "There is good potential in the car. I think what we have done over the winter has been the right way to go."

Fourth was Alain Menu in the Euroteam Opel and Michael Bartels in the Holzer-run Opel, who clashed with Mercedes rookie Stefan Mucke on the first day, was fifth. The third 2002 Opel of Manuel Reuter had its roll out on Saturday afternoon and features new front end aerodynamics. Unfortunately it had a fuel tank leak and Reuter finished in sixth.
