Premiere on the Nordschleife of the Nürburgring: For the first time, an Opel Astra V8 Coupé from the DTM will be racing on the legendary race track in the Eifel. Opel is using the sixth round of the Langstrecken-Meisterschaft Nürburgring on Saturday, July 27, as a first test for next year's ADAC 24 hour race at the Nürburgring. Opel motorsport director Volker Strycek: "At this early stage, we want to find out whether it is possible to drive on the Nordschleife with this modern touring car, as the conditions of the track can't be compared with any other circuit."

The current test car, prepared by Opel Team Holzer and coloured in the design of Opel sponsor Vitaphone will be used. The black Astra V8 Coupé, powered by a 462 hp strong Opel four cylinder V8 engine, will be driven by Volker Strycek, the 1984 German touring car champion and an experienced Nürburgring-specialist.

"I am convinced that the DTM-Opel will enthuse the great number of fans along the Nordschleife", says Strycek. "Whether or not we will be actually starting in the race has yet to be seen. In practice, we want to get first information, that's all. It is the first step towards the decision of possibly competing in next year's 24 hour race with such a car."
