The Opel Vectra GTS V8 faced its opponents from Audi and Mercedes for the first occasion during the multiple-day DTM-test at the race track in Estoril, Portugal. On two of the four days of testing, Opel works-drivers topped the time sheets, while Opel-drivers were second fastest on the two other days.

"However, the results of this test shouldn't be overestimated," says Opel's motorsport manager Volker Strycek. "First and foremost, we have been working with our car. Only at the season opener at Hockenheim, April 18, we will really know where we are. Nevertheless, we are quite happy with this test."

For the first time in preparation for the forthcoming season, the three makes represented in the DTM were facing each other in sunny conditions at Estoril. The OPC Team Holzer saw Heinz-Harald Frentzen (Tuesday/Wednesday), Manuel Reuter (Monday) and Timo Scheider (Thursday) taking turns behind the wheel of the Opel Vectra GTS V8 with the logo of German weekly magazine "stern".

The Opel Vectra GTS V8 of the OPC Team Phoenix, sporting the livery of the GMAC Bank, was driven by Laurent Aiello (Monday/Tuesday), Marcel Fässler (Wednesday) and Peter Dumbreck (Thursday). The official OPC test car in "Playboy"-design also ran at Estoril with test driver Marcel Tiemann (Monday/Tuesday), Peter Dumbreck (Wednesday) and Manuel Reuter (Thursday). Dutch driver Jeroen Bleekemolen tested with the Opel Astra V8 Coupé of the OPC Euroteam on Wednesday and Thursday.

Manuel Reuter was fastest on Monday, while Heinz-Harald Frentzen set the benchmark on Tuesday and was second fastest on Wednesday. Timo Scheider set the second best time on Thursday. "The margins were tiny. This is yet another indication that the forthcoming season will be very exciting," says Opel's motorsport manager Volker Strycek. The next official test of the DTM-organisation ITR is taking place in Brno (Czech Republic), April 1 till 4.
