First Row for Bruno Spengler

Bruno Spengler (Mercedes-Benz Bank AMG C-Class) will start Sunday's sixth round of the 2009 DTM at the Nurburgring from the first row of the grid. In the single-lap shoot out at the end of Saturday's qualifying, the Canadian set a time of 1m23.684 and was second fastest, 0.195sec behind the pole position time of Martin Tomczyk (Audi); and this with 10 kilograms more weight in the 2009 C-Class, which is the consequence of two wins and a second place out of the previous four races. These 10 kilos additional weight make up almost two tenths of a second per lap. Paul Di Resta at the wheel of the AMG Mercedes C-Class qualified sixth with a 1m23.850.

Ralf Schumacher (Trilux AMG Mercedes C-Class/1m24.548) and Championship leader Gary Paffett (Salzgitter AMG Mercedes C-Class/1m24.650) will start 15th and 16th respectively. Paffetts' car suffered from misfire from the beginning of qualifyings, and the 12min-long first part was too short to solve the problem.

Qualifying, part 1: Compared to this morning's free practice, Di Resta improved by more than six tenths of a second and was third fastest with a 1m24.026 and the fastest C-Class driver. Schumacher ended up 15th on a 1m24.548 ahead of Paffett with a 1m24.650 and Susie Stoddart (TV Spielfilm AMG Mercedes C-Class) with a1m25.207; these three did not make it to Q2.

Qualifying, part 2: This time, Di Resta ended up sixth with a 1m24.082 ahead of Spengler on a 1m24.181. Maro Engel (GQ AMG Mercedes C-Class) came home 10th, 1m24.374, followed by Jamie Green (Junge Sterne AMG Mercedes C-Class), 1m24.574; Mathias Lauda (stern AMG Mercedes C-Class) qualified 13th on a 1m24.637.

Bruno Spengler (2009 Mercedes-Benz Bank AMG C-Class), second (1:23.684): "A good qualifying. The balance of my C-Class was perfect. I look forward to Sunday's race. I know I can rely on my team's pit stops and strategy -- they are great guys."

Paul Di Resta (2009 AMG Mercedes C-Class), sixth (1:23.850): "This is not the result I had planned. However, we had good long runs and therefore I am confident for the race."

Maro Engel (2008 GQ AMG Mercedes C-Class), 10th (1:24.374): "Not so bad. Our team improved the car significantly after this morning's free practice and my C-Class was great. Of course, I feel the 10 kilo more weight compared to the Audis and they cost me a top 8 position."

Jamie Green (2008 Junge Sterne AMG Mercedes C-Class), 11th (1:24.574): "In the first part I easily posted a time good enough to move up; however, in Q2 I just wasn't able to set a really fast lap. It's a shame -- I think Q3 was possible today."

Mathias Lauda (2008 stern AMG Mercedes C-Class), 13th (1:24.637): "Today my qualifying was a lot better than in the previous events. Unfortunately I lost time at the first sector, otherwise a better grid position would have been possible."

Ralf Schumacher (2009 Trilux AMG Mercedes C-Class), 15th (1:24.548): "It's a shame -- a top 10 result was possible today. Unfortunately I wasn't able to put it together. But our long runs are good and at the Nurburgring overtaking should be possible not only by a good strategy."

Gary Paffett (2009 Salzgitter AMG Mercedes C-Class), 16th (1:24.650): "My car suffered from misfire from the beginning and I had only one run which unfortunately was marginally not good enough for Q2. We tried to fix the problem, but we ran out of time. Now I have to find something for tomorrow -- after I had already won from seventh on the grid, I have practice to turn bad grid positions into good results."

Susie Stoddart (2008 TV-Spielfilm AMG Mercedes C-Class), 17th (1:25.207): "We had an electronic problem in free practice and I therefore lacked track time. As a consequence, also the qualifying was disappointing."

Norbert Haug, Vice President Mercedes-Benz Motorsport: "A strong performance by Bruno Spengler. He managed row one despite a 10-kilo handicap weight after our three wins in the first five races. Without that weight the pole time was possible for him. However, our team performance could be significantly better -- a technical problem with misfire in the first part of qualifying prevented points leader Gary Paffett to move up -- a big handicap for him; the top ranked driver after five races so far has to start from row eight. Congratulations to Martin Tomczyk and Audi on the pole -- Bruno was not able to beat him, but all the other Audis despite his handicap weight, which is remarkable."
