Nurburgring DTM: Wittmann dominates Race 1, Blomqvist completes BMW 1-2

Marco Wittmann extended his championship lead to 35 points after comfortably winning the first DTM race at the Nurburgring from pole.

Wittmann and Tom Blomqvist both had strong starts to keep first and second after off the line, with Daniel Juncadella going past Jamie Green and Edoardo Mortara.

However, both Audi drivers muscled their way back into third and fourth in just a couple of corners.

Wittmann soon managed to pull away from Blomqvist, who, without DRS, was under pressure by Green.

However, Green himself then lost a bit of ground to the Anglo-Swede and let Audi teammate Mortara past.

Mortara made a move on Blomqvist on the back straight, which resulted in contact between the duo and the Italian had to cut the chicane.

As he gave up his position to Blomqvist, Juncadella, who just passed Green, also tried to sneak past but Mortara eventually kept third.

Juncadella then came under pressure from Green and Bruno Spengler and was taken out of the race by the latter.

All that action gave Wittmann a lead of seven seconds, allowing him to comfortably finish first.

No more moves for second meant Blomqvist took the place, with Mortara giving third place back to Green on the final lap.

Timo Glock took fifth as Spengler got a penalty for his collision with Juncadella.

Paul di Resta ended up as the top Mercedes in sixth, ahead of stablemate Lucas Auer, who had set the fastest lap in qualifying but took a grid drop.

Maxime Martin was eighth as Robert Wickens, who started 13th, could only recover to ninth.

The final point-scoring position was secured by Maximilian Gotz.

UPDATE: Mattias Ekstrom was disqualified due to missing weighing. In addition, Adrien Tambay received a three-place grid penalty for tomorrow's race for making contact with Augusto Farfus.
