The DTM will run with a new race format in 2003, disposing of the previous short sprint, or qualifying, race (35k) and the following main race (100k), in favour of one longer race. The new single event will be 160-170km and will last approximately one hour, making driver fitness and stamina even more important.

Two pit stops in the race will now be mandatory, with a tyre change each stop, as opposed to the former one, and refueling will be introduced in accordance with the longer race distance. Therefore, pit stop strategy will become even more important. Cars are permitted a 20 litre refill at least once -- tanks size is 70 litres -- and refuelling will be done manually with cans.

The qualifying system is also new; two sessions, the first of 20 minutes with all drivers on track which sets the grid places 11-20 and then a second session to set places 1-10. In the second session the top ten will compete in single laps.

The points system for the race will follow the Formula One change to 10 for first, 8 second, 6 third and 5,4,3,2,1 from fourth on down to eighth.
