Schneider heading Alesi and Menu during Nürburgring test day
With a lap time of 1.25.662 minutes, Bernd Schneider (AMG-Mercedes CLK) was the fastest driver during the test day before the third round of the DTM at the 3.629 kilometres long sprint circuit of the Nürburgring. The Monaco-based driver was only 0.060 seconds faster than former F1-driver Jean Alesi (also Mercedes-Benz). Behind the two Mercedes-drivers, Alain Menu (Opel Astra V8 Coupé) occupied third place, followed by his Scottish fellow-Opel-driver Peter Dumbreck.
After the 90 minutes' test session, Swiss Menu was happy with a good start: "For the first day, this is much promising. I even could reach my fastest lap time twice. This means that I could even improve a little bit more."
In the morning hours, the drivers of the Abt-Audi-team had dominated the first encounter of the 21 DTM-drivers. Swede Mattias Ekström had been fastest from his team-mate Karl Wendlinger (Austria). DTM-champion Laurent Aiello had been eleventh in the morning, but was quite relaxed about it on his 34th birthday: "Quite easy. Today, I just tested many different set-ups. But I have already chosen my birthday present: a trophy on Sunday."
