Second grid row locked out by Abt Sportsline

With two perfect laps in qualifying and the subsequent single-lap session (Super Pole), Martin Tomczyk (21) and Mattias Ekström (24) occupied third and fourth place and thus the entire second row of the starting grid for Abt Sportsline.

In eighth place, Christian Abt from Kempten completed the good team result before the third season round of the DTM (Deutsche Tourenwagen Masters) at the Nürburgring, champion Laurent Aiello will be starting from eleventh place into the 41 lap race.

Quotes after qualifying

Martin Tomczyk (Super Pole, 1.25.205 min., 3rd place):

"I am entirely happy and I am looking forward to the race. In free practice this morning, I had a minor technical problem, but hopefully, that was my only problem for this weekend. I know that I have the necessary speed to make it onto the podium. Tomorrow, I just want to make the best use of it."

Mattias Ekström (Super Pole, 1.25.281 min., 4th place):

"I gave everything I had and I didn't make a single mistake. For Sunday, I am very optimistic, because we have been working well all weekend and found a much better set-up for the race than for qualifying."

Christian Abt (Super Pole, 1.25.568 min., 8th place):

"On my Super Pole-lap, I was a little bit too cautious, because I definitely didn't want to make a mistake. Normally, the first section is my best, but today, I lost some time there. But for me, it is the Sunday that counts anyway, I am a racing driver and not a qualifying driver."

Laurent Aiello (1.25.642 min., 11th place):

"Slowly, eleventh place is becoming my usual position -- I am anything but happy with it. But in Italy, we have seen already that anything can happen. And here at the Nürburgring, overtaking is easier, so I still have all the chances."

Karl Wendlinger (1.25.851 min., 13th place):

"With the new qualifying format, anything can happen. The fact that today, I didn't make it into the Super Pole for the first time this season is no big thing. I will try to find the right strategy for the race and I will try to get to the front."

Peter Terting (1.26.653 min., 20th place):

"In qualifying, I drove my fastest lap of the weekend at my first attempt already and I could have improved even more. But unfortunately, during my second attempt, I made a mistake after a personal fastest time in the first sector. My goal for Sunday remains unchanged: I want to finish the race again without any mistakes."

Hans-Jürgen Abt (team principal):

"Competition is very close in the DTM, which also becomes clear by Laurent Aiello's position. But he is the champion and surely will be attacking in the race. It is a great thing that our youngsters Martin (Tomczyk) and Mattias (Ekström) are stepping in and have locked out the entire second grid row for our Abt-Audi TT-Rs."
