Former Formula One champion Niki Lauda tried his hand at driving a Mercedes DTM car at the A1-Ring this weekend and enjoyed the experience. Lauda was invited by Mercedes motorsport director Norbert Haug to visit the eighth round of the championship and he was impressed by the atmosphere and the action.

"The DTM is a great racing series, without question," said the three-time F1 title winner. "You can see for yourself how close the times are." Lauda took a few laps of the circuit to get used to the Mercedes DTM taxi then chauffeured guests during the afternoon.

"I was surprised how quickly I got used to the car, it was not as hard as I thought," he said. "It was very well set up and well balanced which made it fun to drive. I understand now why my friend Jean Alesi likes the DTM so much."

Lauda's son Mathias accompanied his father and also present at the A1-Ring are Gerhard Berger and son Nico and Hans-Joachim Stuck with son Johannes.
