The ITR introduces itself: Hans-J?rgen Abt

Hans-J?rgen Abt is team principal and, together with his brother Christian, managing director of the Abt Sportsline GmbH in Kempten. Founded in 1896 as a horse-shoeing company, the family business from the Allg?u has become the worldwide leading tuning company for cars of the brands Audi, VW, Skoda and Seat today. The experience of the racing team goes back over 40 years. For a certain period of time, the elder of the two Abt-brothers, Hans-J?rgen, was also playing an active role in this tradition.

In the early 1980s, Hans-J?rgen Abt started his career in motorsport. Following the example of his father, the junior opted for the off-road scene. He celebrated his first successes in motocross, but a single seater course whetted his appetite for circuit racing. "I tried to make my mark in touring car racing and I like to believe that I didn't do too bad a job", Abt says.

Hans-J?rgen Abt got started in the VW Polo Cup. His father Johann Abt recalls, still smiling today: "Hardly ever, a car came back unscathed when Hans was driving." In the Fiesta Mixed Cup in 1991, fun was the most important, too. Here, Abt competed together with his current wife, Margit. In 1993, he competed in some rounds of the newly created ADAC GT Cup, where brother Christian then replaced him behind the wheel of the first self-developed Abt-Audi.

I decided to concentrate on our company", says Hans-J?rgen Abt. "Although this decision wasn't particularly easy for me, but in hindsight, it was perfectly right." Abt Sportsline's success proves the team principal's right. From then on, he is following his brother's races from the pit wall. "It is almost just as much fun. Sometimes, it is even more exciting than being in the cockpit yourself."

Hans-J?rgen Abt has been a board member of the ITR since 2002, which is both an honour and fun for the 39-year old from Kempten. "The ITR-membership is a huge task, that I am facing with pleasure", says Abt. "In the board, we are all pulling into the same direction to move the DTM forward. I am happy that I can contribute to this."
