The DTM season opener at the Hockenheimring proved a good one for fans and teams alike and especially for Mercedes. Despite the downpour on race day, Mercedes triumphed with a one-two finish and four cars in the points scoring positions. Vodafone AMG-Mercedes' Bernd Schneider took the victory, closely followed by AMG-Mercedes' Marcel F?ssler.

"The car was quite good," F?ssler told Motorsport.com. "We had some problems on Friday afternoon, the grip was not so good but it was better on Saturday." The Swiss qualified third on the grid with the new 'super-pole' system and was happy with that: "I like it," he said of the new qualifying. "It's a challenge. You have just one chance to do your best lap so you have to get it right."

A change of pit-stop strategy for F?ssler early in the race paid off. The rain came down heavily just a few laps in, despite forecasts predicting it would hold off until afterwards. Marcel stayed out a few laps longer than most before pitting for wet tyres.

"We didn't think it would rain," F?ssler explained. "The team made the strategy choice; it would not have been possible to stop straight away as Jean (team mate Alesi) was in front. So we changed my strategy and it worked."

Come the final half a dozen laps or so, reigning champion Laurent Ailleo was right behind the Mercedes but try as he might, he just couldn't get past. "It was not so bad," F?ssler said. "He (Aiello) put some pressure on me but he didn't manage to overtake in the places where he could of, so I was keeping him behind me okay."

A podium start to the season is good by anyone's standards and naturally F?ssler is hoping for more of the same: "It was a good race for the team and it was good for me," he said. "And I hope it continues. I look forward to Adria, I think we have a good car and we're competitive so hopefully we can get some more points."

The next race is at the Adria International Raceway, Italy, on May 11th.
