Heinz-Harald Frentzen finishes seventh in DTM invitation race in Shanghai
With his Opel Vectra GTS V8, Heinz-Harald Frentzen (OPC Team Holzer) finished seventh in the DTM invitation race at the street circuit of Shanghai. Jeroen Bleekemolen (OPC Euroteam) came home in twelfth place with the Opel Astra V8 Coupé. Timo Scheider (OPC Team Holzer) and Marcel Fässler (OPC Team Phoenix) didn't make it to the finish.
In qualifying, Heinz-Harald Frentzen had set the eighth fastest time. In the subsequent Super Pole session for the ten fastest drivers, he improved to seventh place. Frentzen had a good start, but the race was stopped after a few metres already, because a manhole cover had come loose on the main straight and a driver had damaged his car massively after hitting it. The red flag was followed by an interruption of more than three and a half hours, during which all covers had to be sealed. Only after that, the race could be started, the event was reduced from the originally planned two races to a single header.
At the start of the race, Frentzen stayed out of all problems and managed to gain one place during the first lap. On lap twelve, he kept control over his car in a superb manner after locking up under braking on one of the many bumps on the track. He lost one place and finally made it home in seventh position. On lap five, Timo Scheider and Marcel Fässler had to avoid a car that was stuck on the track. In the process, Fässler damaged his car and eventually retired in the pits. For Scheider, the race was over after a collision on lap 13. Jeroen Bleekemolen drove an error-free race with his Opel Astra V8 Coupé and finished twelfth.
Volker Strycek (Opel motorsport director):
"It was an eventful race in an impressive city. The people in charge and the local organisation really have shown great effort. I am satisfied with Heinz-Harald Frentzen's performance. Unfortunately, Timo Scheider and Marcel Fässler became involved in accidents. Too bad that they both had to retire. Jeroen Bleekemolen drove quite a decent race with the 2002 Astra."
Heinz-Harald Frentzen (OPC Team Holzer) -- 7th place:
"This event really has impressed me. In the race, I could have been a little bit faster, but the radiator of my car was blocked. I am quite happy with the result."
Jeroen Bleekemolen (OPC Euroteam) -- 12th place:
"The race was fun. I think that I have made the best out of my possibilities. I have made no mistake and made it to the finish."
Marcel Fässler (OPC Team Phoenix) -- 14th place (retired):
"Initially, I stayed out of everything. Then, when Terting spun in front of us and Timo had to brake heavily, I slightly touched him. Unfortunately, I had to retire later with damage that was caused in that accident."
Timo Scheider (OPC Team Holzer) -- retired:
"Following the mayhem in the opening laps, I finally found a good rhythm. Then, I closed the gap to Mücke and I was clearly faster. While trying to overtake him, unfortunately, we collided."
