The DTM season opening weekend at Hockenheim is just a couple of days away and everyone is impatient to get started after the long winter. The most recent track action was the common tests for all three manufacturers -- Mercedes, Opel and Audi -- at Estoril and Brno, but it's too hard to judge who, if any, might have an early advantage.
This season Opel will field six new Vectra GTS V8 models in two teams: OPC Team Holzer with drivers Manuel Reuter, Heinz-Harald Frentzen and Timo Scheider, and OPC Team Phoenix with Marcel F?ssler, Peter Dumbreck and Laurent Aiello. The manufacturer will also field one 2003 spec Astra V8 Coup?, with Jeroen Bleekemolen (Euroteam).
"Testing was quite good, I'm quite happy about it," F?ssler told Motorsport.com. "Our car is not bad at all but we don't know where we stand at the moment, it's too hard to tell. Only when we get to this weekend will we know for sure. Once we're on track with the others on Friday and Saturday, then we will see."
"I don't know what to expect really. We are happy with the car, there are no problems, but everyone is doing different things in testing. I'm just going to go and get on with it, I've missed fighting on track so I can't wait for this weekend."
Opel will also enter the N?rburgring 24 hours again this year, having won the endurance event last season. Two Opel Astra V8 Coup?s will take part; the 2003 team of Opel motor sport boss Volker Strycek, Timo Schieder, Manuel Reuter and Opel test driver Marcel Tiemann being joined by F?ssler and Christian Menzel.
F?ssler has been busy with testing not only for the DTM season but also in preparation for N?rburgring in June. "It's been a lot of fun," he said. "I really enjoyed it and it's really interesting. But, of course, the main focus at the moment is the DTM, that comes first."
F?ssler will drive the GMAC sponsored Opel this season and the first DTM race is on April 18th.
