The duel continues: Norisring-heroes Schneider and Aiello in front
Most recently, they staged an excellent fight at the Norisring in Nuremberg a fortnight ago, that Aiello finally decided in his favour with a tiny margin. And they also played the main role in the DTM-test at the Lausitzring: Bernd Schneider (Mercedes-Benz CLK-DTM) and Laurent Aiello (Abt-Audi TT-R).
The two swapped positions in the course of the 90 minutes' test session in the afternoon. But this time round, Schneider emerged in first place, and quite clearly so. With his fastest time of 1.39.976 minutes, the German outpaced the Frenchman at the 4.534 km long track by 0.455 km. In preparation for the sixth round of the prestigious touring car series, that is scheduled in the Niederlausitz-region for Sunday, the captive duel between reigning champion Schneider and current points leader Aiello continues.
In the morning session, Aiello's team mate Mattias Ekström was fastest. The Swede, who is celebrating his 24th birthday on Sunday, set a best time of 1.40.076 minutes. Ekström, who had already scored a podium finish at the EuroSpeedway Lausitz last year, was 0.314 seconds faster than Marcel Fässler (Mercedes-Benz CLK-DTM), who was second fastest. During the test day at the Lausitzring, Alain Menu was fastest Opel-driver: the Swiss set a fastest lap time of 1.40.871 minutes.
After his strong performance on the test day, Bernd Schneider is looking forward to the forthcoming race: "Last year's event has shown how many opportunities for overtaking there are at the Lausitzring. It is not easy to find the right set-up for the combination of fast and slow corners, but apparently, I have succeeded today. I like to drive here, because the huge grand stand and the excited crowd cater for a good atmosphere."
