In preparation for the planned participation in this year's 24-hour race at the Nürburgring-Nordschleife (June 12/13), Opel conducted an endurance test in Estoril, Portugal last week. During three days of testing, a modified Opel Astra V8 Coupé from the 2003 DTM was driven by Opel works-drivers Marcel Fässler, Timo Scheider, Manuel Reuter and Marcel Tiemann, as well as Opel's motorsport manager Volker Strycek.
The car's modifications compared to the race car from last year's DTM are based on the regulations for the 24-hour race and for the Nürburgring endurance championship. At the end of October, Volker Strycek an Christian Menzel won the final season round of this championship with the Opel Astra V8 Coupé.
"Next to our involvement in the DTM, our participation in the 24-hour race is another highlight in Opel's motorsport programme for 2004", says Opel's motorsport manager Strycek. "During the test in Estoril, we have tried several components and also various tyres. The changing weather conditions with rain in the last afternoon allowed us to try slicks, intermediates and rain tyres and several different settings. All in all, we have acquired valuable experience that will certainly be useful during our efforts on the Nordschleife."
In 2003, the Opel works-team with Volker Strycek, Timo Scheider, Marcel Tiemann and Manuel Reuter drove the Opel Astra V8 Coupé to victory in the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring in front of some 200,000 spectators. Strycek: "This year, we will once again be up against works-teams from Audi and BMW as well as numerous strong privateer teams. And of course, we want to repeat last year's great success!"
