Just one day before the first race weekend of the DTM season, Mercedes and Uwe Alzen have parted company. Alzen, 35, drove for Mercedes in 2001 and 2002 for the HWA Mercedes squad and was fifth in last year's Driver's championship. No reason has been given for Alzen's abrupt departure except that there was a "difference of opinions" on several issuses.

"I thank the AMG and the HWA teams for the last two years in the DTM," Alzen said in a statement. "However, I'd now like to aim for new targets in motor sport."

HWA team manager Hans-J?rgen Mattheis said: "Our team thanks Uwe for his work. We wish him all success in his further motor sport career."

Norbert Haug, Vice President Mercedes-Benz Motorsport added: "Uwe Alzen and the HWA DTM team had two successful years in which HWA won the Teams' Championship twice, also thanks to Uwe's performance. Uwe scored a total of three race wins with HWA.

"However, we now have different opinions on the further development of Uwe's targets and ours. Therefore, we jointly agreed to go separate ways. Uwe is one of the really fast and talented drivers in touring car racing and we wish him all the best for his further career."

Young Dutch driver Christijan Albers will join HWA in Alzen's place while Patrick Huisman will step into team Rosberg at this weekend's season opener at Hockenheim.
