Mattias Ekström to start Italian guest appearance from second grid row
The starting grid line-up for the second round of the DTM promises an exciting Sunday afternoon: while Mattias Ekström will be starting the race from the second row as the best-placed Abt driver, DTM-champion Laurent Aiello will be starting catching up from eleventh position at the Adria International Raceway.
The 47 laps near Venice look all set to become a hot battle: during the test and practice sessions already, temperatures partly exceeded the 30 degrees-mark.
Quotes after qualifying:
Mattias Ekström (Super Pole, 1.12.269 min., 3rd place):
"In the Super Pole, I didn't want to take any unnecessary risks. When I looked on the time screen, it was clear to me: I was just one tenth of a second too cautious. In the race, it is all about one thing: full throttle, up and away to the front."
Martin Tomczyk (Super Pole, 1.12.695 min., 6th place):
"Before this weekend, I had worries whether the track would suit me at all. But it went better than expected and I am happy having made it into the Super Pole. Third row is a good position to start from, you can do something from there."
Karl Wendlinger (Super Pole, 1.13.604 min., 9th place):
"Only the last one of the three sets of tyres I used in timed practice had grip, with that one, I easily made it into the Super Pole. There, however, things were looking differently again. Because at this track, overtaking is very difficult, so we will have to come up with a particularly good strategy."
Laurent Aiello (1.13.053 min., 11th place):
"Today in qualifying, I just had no grip, neither while accelerating, nor under braking. I definitely need a good start to get further up to the front tomorrow. The distance is long, temperatures are high. There are many things that can happen."
Christian Abt (1.13.225 min., 15th place):
"I am feeling well in the car, but still, my time is not right. But that is over and done with now: tomorrow, I will be taking it easy in the race and then try to get up to the front. I am top fit, when conditions are tough, I am only getting better and better."
Peter Terting (1.13.720 min., 18th place):
"It is getting better, but I am still far from satisfied. After twelfth place in free practice, I would like to be a little bit closer to the top ten. I get more and more confidence in my TT-R and I am getting better in every session. My goal for tomorrow is clear: I want to see the chequered flag after 47 laps."
Hans-Jürgen Abt (team director):
"Too bad, that Laurent just missed out on the Super Pole. As I know him, he surely would have made up a few places there. But I am satisfied like this as well: our six TT-Rs are well spread among the field. Mattias and Martin are charging in front, and my other four guys will surely be showing a great overtaking race for the fans here and in front of the TV-screens."
