Laurent Aiello starting from second row for final DTM sprint

The sprint towards the end of the 2003 season in the DTM will be exciting: reigning champion Laurent Aiello will be starting from the second grid row for the eighth season round at the A1-Ring in Austria. Like that, he is in the sandwich between the two championship leading Mercedes-drivers. Christian Abt will be starting as the second-best driver of the team Abt Sportsline from sixth place on the grid, one position ahead of Mattias Ekström.

Quotes after qualifying

Laurent Aiello (Super Pole, 1.27.587 min., 4th place):

"During the Super Pole-session, the track was dirty after some driver had come off, but I don't know whether it could have been quicker had the circumstances been different. All weekend long, all the cars have been very close here. I think that we will have a fair chance tomorrow rto beat Mercedes. With this starting grid, the spectators will surely get to see a magnificent show."

Christian Abt (Super Pole, 1.27.877 min., 6th place):

"Today, I wanted to keep cool and complete an error-free lap during the Super Pole. Apart from briefly locking up once, which didn't cost me a lot of time, I succeeded perfectly. For me, sixth place is a great position to start from. I am looking forward to the race."

Mattias Ekström (Super Pole, 1.27.937 min., 7th place):

"No idea why it didn't go faster. The car was good and I didn't make any mistakes. I didn't want to take any risks, but I was still on the limit all the time. At this fast track, we are just lacking a little bit of speed."

Martin Tomczyk (Super Pole, 1.37.095 min., 10th place):

"Up to the penultimate corner, I was at least on course for the second row on the grid, but then, I spun. Of course, I am incredibly upset about it. But that is what the DTM is like: there is no mercy when you make the slightest mistake."

Peter Terting (1.28.468 min., 17th place):

"I had a strange qualifying: I spun during my first attempt, during the second one, the session was briefly interrupted after an accident and on my third attempt, yellow flags were out in one place. Maybe, I wouldn't have made it into Super Pole without that either, but at least I would have been much closer to the top ten."

Karl Wendlinger (1.28.592 min., 19th place):

"So far, we haven't managed all weekend to get a perfect lap together. Admittedly, I am on the pace in the individual sectors, but you have to get it together. Nevetheless, I don't give up. I rather will be fighting in the race tomorrow and show a nice race for the many fans I have here in Austria."

Hans-Jürgen Abt (team director):

"Having four of our Abt-Audi TT-Rs in the Super Pole is a great thing. The starting grid is a good mix of all three makes, so for sure, we will get to see a great show. Of course, I feel sorry for Karl (Wendlinger), who surely had hoped for more during his home round. But he will quickly forget about the result and start catching up tomorrow."
