IHRA ANNOUNCES TOP FUEL PURSE INCREASE FOR 2006

NORWALK, OHIO.- In an effort to stimulate continued growth of its Top Fuel class, the IHRA has announced substantial purse increases beginning with the 2006 IHRA Hooters Drag Racing Series.

Beginning next season, Top Fuel teams will compete for an additional $225,500 in purse money, an increase of $20,500 per event. In addition, each participating team will be granted free car and driver entry plus eight free crew tickets compliments of Evan Knoll and Torco Race Fuels.

The announcement was made by IHRA President Aaron Polburn, who was in Rockingham for the season ending Udderly SMOOth World Finals.

"Good quality Top Fuel racing is a must to achieve our growth goals over the next few years," Polburn said. "It was time that we restructured the Top Fuel program and made an investment in the class to insure those goals."

"With the first two rounds matching the NHRA Top Fuel purse plus the addition of the Evan Knoll/Torco Race Fuels complimentary entry fees and crew tickets, we believe we have a very attractive program that will help fund our great group of current teams and hopefully attract a few more. It's all about putting on the best show possible and I think this program will help us achieve that goal."

The only caveat to the new purse structure is that it will be paid only to cars running the final Saturday night qualifying session. Any qualified car failing to make the Saturday night session will be paid the 2005 purse amounts.

According to Polburn, the purse increase was made possible by a redistribution of the season points fund along with a major contribution by IHRA and the national event track owners and operators.

"Top Fuel is the heart and soul of the Hooters Series," said Rockingham Dragway owner Steve Earwood. "Nitromethane is what gives drag racing its unique personality so I think this is a good step toward further enhancing the quality of the Top Fuel show.
