Leicester, NY. -- (July 6, 1999) Chris Holbrook and the Stu Evans/Ford Credit Racing team head to New York International Raceway Park for the CARQUEST Empire Nationals this weekend - stop number five in the hunt for the Pro Stock Championship in the IHRA Snap on Tools Drag Racing Series.
The team will be looking to get back on the winning track after an early exit at last month's Summer Nationals at Cordova Dragway.
After qualifying in the No. 3 spot, Chris made it past the opening round of eliminations. Then, the team discovered a problem that resulted in an engine change between rounds.
"When I let the clutch out against Yoak in the second round, I just sat there as the tires spun on the starting line," said Chris. "At the finish line, my .85 just didn't make it against his .83
"Those things happen. But, I just wish we could get some better luck on Sunday!"
Holbrook is currently No. 3 in the IHRA Pro Stock points standings (321) (Chris is still No. 1 in Sunoco Pro Stock Shootout points) and the newly paved quarter mile at New York International Raceway Park is just the right place for a jump into that No. 1 spot.
"We heard that the new track surface is ultra smooth and they've added a new concrete starting line. That's just the kind of track our Ford Probe likes," said Holbrook. "When you're making the kind of horsepower that we do, a smooth surface at the top end is crucial."
The team spent the past week testing at the Mid-Michigan Motorplex with the IHRA's newly mandated Pro Stock rear wing configuration, where the results were very positive.
"It's good to see the IHRA has taken steps to stabilize the cars on the top end," said crew chief Butch Peterson. "The new wing hasn't slowed us down that much and the car feels more stable.
"We'd like to regain our winning form this weekend, starting with the No. 1 qualifying spot and then victory circle on Sunday. We know very well that's what it's going to take to put us on top."
Qualifying action at the IHRA CARQUEST Empire Nationals begins on Friday July 9 with final eliminations on Sunday.
