Victory in Pro Stock Superbowl and Runs of 6.62 and 6.60 Have the Evans and Holbrook Team Pointed in the Right Direction
GARDEN CITY, Mich. -- Spectacular weather and a superbly groomed track yielded unbelievable performances from the Stu Evans Pro Stock duo of Stewart Evans and Chris Holbrook at last weekend's Pro Stock Superbowl held at Houston Raceway Park.
With the team's eyes set on the goal of a 1-2 finish in the 1999 IHRA Pro Stock championship, the results from this first official test and tune event of the 1999 season have certainly fired a shot across the collective bows of the competition.
During Saturday's sessions, Stewart Evans recorded an ultra-quick 6.626 at 208.67-mph pass. At the time, the quickest IHRA Pro Stock run ever recorded.
The IHRA Pro Stock final saw the two Stu Evans Ford Credit Ford Probes racing each other, with Evans beating his teammate Holbrook on a hole shot.
Then, during a testing session early on Sunday morning, Evans kicked it up a notch. On his first pass of the day, the 22 year-old driver stopped the clocks in 6.600 seconds with a speed of 209.74! The quickest IHRA Pro Stock run ever recorded.
Both Saturday's and Sunday's passes were better than the existing IHRA Pro Stock ET record of 6.646. Ironically, it is Evans' teammate Chris Holbrook who holds the speed record (209.23 mph) set in 1998.
"We came here with a focus on improving our ET and miles-per-hour over last year," said Evans. "It looks like we're headed in the right direction.
"Winning in Houston was a great way to start the season for the team and our sponsor, Ford Credit. With both cars in the final round, this is just a hint of things to come."
His teammate Holbrook echoed those sentiments. "Even with the problems we had on Sunday with a dropped valve and a broken clutch linkage, we both ended up in the finals. I can tell you this, you'll be seeing a lot more of the Stu Evans Ford Credit Pro Stock Probes racing side by side in the finals this year."
Crew Chief Butch Petersen added, "It was a very interesting weekend, to say the least. Both cars performed just about as we expected. We're still working on the tune-up. But I've got to admit, I leave Houston with a smile on my face."
Next stop for the duo of Evans and Holbrook is the third annual Majesty Homes Groundhog Warm-Up at Darlington International Dragway in Darlington, S.C. February 17 - 20, the final testing event before the start of the 1999 IHRA Snap-on Tools Drag Racing season.
