Bradenton, Fla. -- (March 22, 1999) With the first event of the 1999 IHRA Snap on Drag Racing season ending prematurely, the Stu Evans/Ford Credit Racing team has a lot of unanswered questions.
At the season opening Winter Nationals at Darlington Dragway, Chris Holbrook reclaimed the Pro Stock ET World Record during the second qualifying session on Saturday when he recorded a stellar 6.612 - 209.07 mph blast. That run put him in the No. 1 qualifying position to do battle against an extremely tight 16-car Pro Stock field.
Unfortunately, rain postponed the final rounds of eliminations (rescheduled for May 8) and the team was left "chomping at the bit", so to speak, with their sights now focused on this weekend's Amalie Nationals at DeSoto Memorial Dragway in Bradenton, Fla.
"On that last qualifying pass on Saturday, when we reset the record, my Ford Probe was just starting to run right," said Holbrook. "After that run, we planned on making some additional changes that we were anxious to put to the test during Sunday's elimination rounds. But, Mother Nature spoiled our party.
"The whole Stu Evans /Ford Credit Racing team has been on hold waiting for this weekend. We know we're on the right track for a championship season and this weekend in Bradenton, we hope we get the chance to prove it to ourselves."
Teammate Stewart Evans was the most disappointed member of the team leaving Darlington.
"With the tricky track surface [at Darlington] I only got one really good pass all weekend, and that put me in the No. 10 spot," said Evans. "Since then, we've discovered that there were some things wrong on my car. Butch [crew chief Peterson] has corrected those problems and I'm ready to take care of business.
"We set the world record at Bradenton last year [6.696]. We love this track and we expect that if the conditions are there, we'll be running in the 6.50's"
The Pro Stock teams get four shots at qualifying this weekend, at 11:30 am and 4:00 pm on Friday and at 12 noon and 6:30 pm on Saturday. Final eliminations begin on Sunday at 12 noon.
DeSoto Memorial Dragway is located just off Interstate 75 South at exit 42. Go east off of exit 42 and proceed nine miles on State Road 64. The track will be on your right.
