Weney Posts First Final Round Appearance at IHRA CARQUEST Northern Nationals
STANTON, MI-- When the best of the IHRA Funny Car contingent took the stage for the final round of competition, fans were guaranteed an all out drag race. For Scott Weney, meeting Von Smith in the final was serious business. Although the fans were not disappointed, Weney could not hold off Smith in a battle that improved his status in the category.
Fresh off of a new world record run at Leicester, Weney opened qualifying with a conservative 6.235/225.63 that placed him in the seventh spot after the first session. He improved during the second session a 6.189/224.43 to end the first day of qualifying in the eighth spot.
Weney continued to improve as he hot-lapped a 6.095/230.65 to step up to the fourth spot during the third session. He ended his final session with a 6.113 elapsed time, which didn't move him up in the order. He claimed the sixth spot and was matched against Paul Noakes in the first round.
Weney didn't cut Noakes any slack as he took the first round win on a 6.018/237.71 run. Weney took the advantage at the start of round two against Jimmy Rector and then the win with a 6.087/234.70, falling slightly off his numbers.
Weney maintained his starting line prowess against Mark Thomas in round three, posting a great run of 6.028/235.19. This created the best of the best final round, with Weney running Von Smith. When the lights came down at Mid-Michigan, both runners scorched the track. Weney, however, fell victim to a wild ride, and in spite of another holeshot, posted a losing 6.370/181.32 run against Smith's victory.
Weney next travels to the IHRA MOPAR PARTS World Nationals in Norwalk, Ohio., August 26 - 29. Weney, along with each Pro Alcohol Funny Car contestant, will be afforded a qualifying run on Thursday and Friday and two on Saturday. Final eliminations are slated for Sunday.
This event will be televised on ESPN2 with the dates TBA in an upcoming issue of the IHRA's Drag Review magazine.
