Castellana Is Securing Half Of The Battle, Falling Short In The Other Half
Stanton MI-- It was just months ago, that Mike Castellana was struggling to earn a place in a Pro Modified field. The veteran, supermarket chain owner appears to have corrected that situation. Now he's focusing his sights on another obstacle, winning the first round. He dropped a tough first round match at the IHRA CARQUEST Northern Nationals in Stanton, Mi., against Dale Brinsfield. But, it wasn't a battle that was lost without an effort. Castellana strapped a holeshot on the much-quicker foe.
Castellana had problems in the initial session of qualifying. It was apparent that he came to the starting line with more power than the tricky Michigan Motorplex racing surface could handle. On his second attempt, he made it further with a 7.41/147.48, struggling to get a handle on this tricky race surface. Castellana jumped into the field during his third attempt with a 6.602/208.17, and secured the 13th position in the tight field. On his final attempt during the Night of Fire qualifying Castellana's 57' Chevy moved toward the centerline and was forced to lift. He faced Dale Brinsfield in the Dylan Mortgage 68' Camaro in the first round of eliminations.
Castellana entered the match against Brinsfield brimming with confidence. The Mid-Michigan Motorplex is the second consecutive race that the Awesome Motorsports team from Westbury, N.Y. has qualified. Mike commented before the first round, "I have a good tune up on the car entering today's competition. I feel we learned something this weekend getting this car to perform under extreme conditions. The heat really makes it difficult to put enough clutch in it to make it perform, but we feel we achieved that goal this weekend", said Castellana.
Unfortunately, for the Western Beef sponsored 1957 Chevy, a (.440) reaction time was not enough to parlay his opening round pass into a win. Castellana commented, "That's okay, we did a great job getting into this very quick field. We will move on to the next one and try to improve."
Mike Castellana's Western Beef' / Awesome Motorsports team will continue their championship quest at the Mopar Parts World Nationals in Norwalk, Oh. August 26-29 1999. Each pro modified contestant will be afforded four qualifying attempts during the course of the event, and the quickest sixteen will compete in final eliminations on Sunday. The event will be televised on ESPN2 with the dates to be published in an upcoming issue of IHRA's Drag Review magazine.
