STANTON, MI.-Looking at the positive side of what has been a frustrating season, Mike Castellana reached the quarter-finals of eliminations of an IHRA tour stop for the first time since the Holley Spring Nationals in early April at Rockingham where he made the quarterfinals.

The negative aspect for the Westbury, N.Y., resident was that another fine qualifying performance in his '57 Western Beef Chevrolet was wasted during the rescheduled finals for the CARQUEST Northern Nationals at the Mid-Michigan Motorplex in Stanton on Saturday afternoon.

Quain Stott, the quickest Mopar Pro Modified qualifier, sent Castellana home with another 229 mph run. He also covered the quarter-mile in 6.378 seconds. Castellana lumbered down the track in 7.643 seconds at 114.30 mph.

After qualifying ninth at 6.517/213.11, Castellana appeared on the way to shed much of the tough luck that has dogged him this season. In the first elimination round, he looked real tough and ousted Fred Hahn by .039 seconds or approximately 13 feet with his elapsed time run of 6.517 seconds at 213.11 mph. Hahn's numbers were 6.429/221.34. The difference came in the holeshot where Castellana got off the starting line in a torrid .431 seconds to a .524 for Hahn.

Castellana will give it another shot next weekend during the Mopar Parts World Nationals at Norwalk (Ohio) Raceway Park. He will make an early appearance as he will set up his Mike's Drive-In theme at the annual Norwalk Thunder In The Streets on Tuesday evening.
