STANTON, MI. - Mark McElwee knew that he was going to have a tough order to fill in the first round when he was scheduled to face points leader and top qualifier Laurie Cannister at the CARQUEST Northern Nationals hosted by the Mid-Michigan Motorplex in Stanton, MI. The driver of the Powershield Coating.com entry knew that he needed to nail the tree on Cannister, but at the finish line it just wasn't enough to fend off Cannister.
The event was special for the McElwee family as it marked a full year of competition within the professional category, which showcases ultra-quick open-bodied machines. They were also rewarded for their ingeniuity on their Y2K Spitzer dragster as they garned Best Appearing honors.
"We were hoping to score a big win here," explained McElwee, who ride is tuned by his brother Artie, more commonly referred to Buzz. "We haven't had the kind of season that we wanted to have, but sometimes that's the kind of luck you have in racing. Our philosophy has always been to make the best of a bad situation. This season has really tested us with the Powershield.com entry."
McElwee made his return after a two-race absence by slipping into the eighth spot with a 6.554/201.70 best.
With the rainout forcing all of the qualified entries to return two weeks later than the scheduled completion date, McElwee had plenty of time to work on his game plan opposite Cannister.
In a battle of sophomore Pro Outlaw racers, Cannister nabbed the quicker reaction time and while McElwee gave it a valiant effort, but his 6.807/148.41 was not enough to track his opponent.
The next stop for the Powershield Coatings.com entry will be at the Mopar Parts World Nationals in Norwalk, Ohio. Qualifying begins on Wednesday, with one session per day until Saturday. Final eliminations are slated for Saturday.
