Thomas among winners at rain-delayed CARQUEST Nationals

STANTON, Mich. -- Mark Thomas, Shannon Jenkins and Floyd Cheek were among professional category winners Monday at the rain-delayed CARQUEST Northern Nationals presented by Dart Heads. Final eliminations in 11 categories at the Mid-Michigan Motorplex event were completed Monday after rain showers moved into the Great Lakes region late Sunday forcing IHRA officials to postpone race activity. The race was the fifth of eight national events on the IHRA Snap-on Tools Championship Drag Racing Series. Four-time IHRA Alcohol Funny Car World Champion Mark Thomas beat arch-rival and defending world title winner Von Smith in a classic battle. Thomas, of Louisville, Ohio, ran 6.202, 229.29, while Oak Ridge, Tenn.'s Smith posted a slower 6.242, 207.51 when his blower belt broke near the finish line. In Pro Modified, Tuscaloosa, Ala.'s Shannon Jenkins ended a season- long streak of bad luck with a win over first-time finalist Quain Stott, of Inman, S.C. Jenkins ran 6.895, 210.18 in his 1941 Willys to take the win. Floyd Cheek earned the Pro Stock victory when Richie Stevens turned on the red light. Cheek, of Chattanooga, Tenn., coasted to the win after Stevens, who had posted three consecutive near-perfect lights during eliminations, mashed the gas too early. Doug Herbert defeated a red-lighting Paul Romine in Top Fuel competition on Sunday just before rain showers postponed the conclusion of eliminations. The race was completed Monday at 4:35 p.m. Sportsman winners included Larry Plummer (API/Spitzer Quick 8); Matt Cooke (Top Dragster); Pat Donovan (Top Sportsman); Joe Leach (Modified); Carla Collins (Quick Rod); Jeff Rudisill (Super Rod); Danny Waters Jr. (Hot Rod); Anthony Bertozzi (Super Stock); Ben Wenzel Sr. (Stock); Tom Dauber (ET Bracket). The three-day event attendance was estimated at 25,000 -- a record for the Mid-Michigan Motorplex. The next IHRA Snap-on Tools Championship Drag Racing Series event will be the Prolong Super Lubricants / Ohio Lottery World Nationals presented by Ethanol Performs, Aug. 21-24 at the Norwalk (Ohio) Raceway Park.
