SHREVEPORT - Rain Postpones Eliminations Mother Nature Delivers More Rain by Larry Sullivan SHREVEPORT, La. - SUMMIT FastNews - Final eliminations for the 1998 IHRA World Finals have been postponed to Saturday, October 24. Red River Raceway is located near the right edge of the green, yellow, and orange blob on your Weather Channel rain map. Overnight and morning rain aggravated an already-soggy situation in the unpaved Sportsman pits and weather forecasts for today and tomorrow call for more of the same, with probabilities in the 70-80 percent range. It was still raining at 11 AM Sunday morning. Any attempt to move race cars around in the unpaved areas churns the dirt into a fluid state, widening the already impressive mud bog that has kept the wrecker crews busy most of the night. That leaves race officials with no choice except to cancel any further attempts to conclude the event this weekend. The revised schedule resumes Friday, October 23, with the track gates opening at 10 AM for race team parking and credentialing. Racing resumes Saturday, with the gates opening at 8 AM, Sportsman time trials at 9 AM, Professional time trials at 11 AM, Sportsman eliminations beginning at 2 PM, and Professional eliminations beginning at 3 PM. All fields except Pro Modified are set. One Pro Modified car has one qualifying run remaining. The final round of the Sunoco Pro Stock Showdown and the remaining two rounds of the Holbrook Tools Top Sportsman Quick Eight will be run during the time trial periods Saturday. It's a shame that Mother Nature has treated a fine, new racing facility so shabbily, but of such adversity are future drag racing legends constructed. When the weather permitted, the competitors found the new racing surface both quick and fast. That fact is evidenced by the quickest-ever Pro Modified field, a category where it takes a good, smooth track to hold a good run. The SUMMIT FastNews crew will return here next Saturday to cover the time trials and eliminations. Please join us.
