Montecalvo Finishes Season With First Round Loss

SHREVEPORT, LA. -- On a day where the doorslammer contingent were in "heaven" with perfect racing conditions, John Montecalvo felt dejected. It was almost as if he were the only one not invited to the big party. However, he was invited. Montecalvo was a player in the quickest Pro Stock racing game in drag racing history.

"Who likes losing in the first round?" said Montecalvo. "Nobody does. But, when you are a part of the quickest fields in Pro Stock history, race after race, you just can't feel that the race is a total waste if you lose in the first round. IHRA Pro Stock racing is tough and you can't win them all."

The Citgo sponsored driver from Center Moriches, N.Y., extended his streak of qualifying for every event during the 1998 IHRA/Snap-On Tools by making the show at the World Finals. He recorded a 6.770 at 204.39 mph and that landed him in the seventh spot of the sixteen car field. He had also qualified for the Sunoco Pro Stock Showdown and reached the semi-finals of the prestigous event before losing to Angelo Alesci.

In the first round, he was paired opposite Larry O'Brien. Montecalvo nabbed the slight holeshot and led briefly in the race. O'Brien covered a lot of ground in his own lane and managed to nab the win light with a 6.733/205.79 to 6.771/203.77.
