The Iceman Slips, Slides and Shuts Off in Quarter-final Match With Hoover At IHRA Parts Pro North American Nationals
EPPING, NH -- The "Iceman" Shannon Jenkins may not be favorable to slick surfaces. However, the veteran racer makes no excuses as he dropped a tough match opposite Ed Hoover. It marked the second race in a row that Jenkins lost to the Gilbert, SC.-based, Pro Modified veteran. He got out of the groove this time and was forced to abort the run in the quarter-finals of the Parts Pro North American Nationals in Epping, N.H. The Pro Modifieds followed a serious oildown just a few runs prior in the Pro Funny Car division that could have been a major contributing factor.
Qualifying started off with a little bit of adversity for the Competition Plus Internet Magazine-sponsored, Jenkins. He opened qualifying with an unhealthy pop and slowed to a 14.62/43.21 in his first attempt. The unhealthy pop turned out to be a broken transmission, which was repaired and yielded a 6.409/218.30, good enough for the 6th spot.
He had to face Tommy Mauney in the first round. Jenkins fared better in a staging duel that led to a quicker reaction time and eventualy a win over Mauney, who tried to play catch up, but fell short.
That set up a rematch of Hoover and Jenkins, who had raced each other only two weeks ago in Norwalk at the Mopar Parts World Nationals. The end result was the same as Hoover got off of the line quicker and Jenkins tried to make up the ground, but drifted out of the groove and was forced to lift.
In other Jenkins news, he was honored on Saturday evening for his appointment to the Car Craft All-Star team. The current points leader and car owners, the Parsons Brothers, signed a sponsorship with Competition Plus Internet Magazine for the duration of the 1999 season.
The "Iceman" and his Shannon Jenkins Motorsports team will continue their bid for the championship at the IHRA CARQUEST Autumn Nationals in Rockingham, NH., September 24-26. Jenkins, along with each Pro Modified contestant will be afforded two qualifying runs on Friday and two on Saturday. Final eliminations are scheduled for Sunday.
This event will be televised on ESPN2 with the dates TBA in an upcoming issue of the IHRA's Drag Review Magazine. .
