Weney struggles into Alcohol Funny field at IHRA Parts Pro Northern Nationals; takes wild semifinal loss
EPPING, NH -- Alcohol Funny Car driver Scott Weney faced problems from the time he arrived at the IHRA Parts Pro North American Nationals in Epping, NH.
Friday's rain delayed qualifying until Saturday, when the professional ranks only had two attempts to make the field. Weney made the field at the expense of some parts, and continued to drive hard all the way into the semi-final round. It didn't hurt him too bad that his opponents were having tougher luck than he was.
Weney made an impressive effort in his first shot as he laid down a 6.02/232.37, good enough for the third spot. But with a trail of oil in the shutdown area, Weney sat out the second session. When the ladder was set, Weney was seventh facing Monty Todd in the first round.
When Monty Todd's car drifted out of the groove, Weney's 5.873/240.42 was a clean pass for the win. Weney took the track with Rusty Betchel for round two. When Betchel broke on the burnout, Weney took a single start. He launched and then shut down, coasting through with the win. The semifinals rematched a familiar pairing of Weney and Von Smith. Weney, determined to win this meeting, launched quicker than Smith, but both drivers had instant tire shake. Smith recovered the better of the two, but Weney's continued to rattle the Firebird into submission, amounting to a semifinal loss.
Weney next travels to the IHRA CARQUEST Autumn Nationals in Rockingham, NC., September 24-26. Weney, along with each Pro Alcohol Funny Car contestant, will be afforded a qualifying run on Thursday and Friday and two on Saturday. Final eliminations are slated for Sunday.
This event will be televised on ESPN2 with the dates TBA in an upcoming issue of the IHRA's Drag Review magazine.
