HUGE British Success in the First Round of the 2003 FIA European Drag Racing Championship
Santa Pod Raceway was buzzing this weekend with three amazing days of racing for the Main Event, the opening round of the 2003 FIA/UEM European Drag Racing Championship.
One of the biggest crowds in Santa Pod history witnessed what is sure to be one of the hardest fought seasons in European drag racing.
The FIA Top Fuel Dragsters are the Formula One cars of the sport, reaching speeds in excess of 300mph in less than six seconds. The wild Brit Smax Smith won the event with an incredible 4.959 second run @ 280mph beating Gary Page (also from the UK) in the final.
The irrepressible Smax has been through just about everything that drag racing can throw at him - from barrel-rolling a dragster to fireballing a Funny Car - and has bounced back with his trademark smile. "I'm on a roll now!" said Smax after collecting his first Top Fuel trophy.
A new European record was narrowly missed by three of the Top Fuel pilots after they all failed to back-up their 4.8 second runs earlier in the weekend.
The Top Methanol Dragsters burn methanol instead of fuel and this weekend saw another Brit Dave Wilson winning the class with a brand new European ET record of 5.461 seconds @ 244mph! Runner up was Peter Schoefer from Germany.
The Top Methanol Funny Car class see 250mph runs in the high five seconds for the quarter mile track and was won by Urs Urbacher from Sweden after reaching No.1 qualifier with the weekend's quickest run of 5.694 seconds.
Rune Berg won the Scandinavian dominated Pro Stock class with a 194.77 mph, 7.071 second finish, beating fellow Swede Michael Malmgren, Michael claimed top speed of 198.28mph in the first round of eliminations.
The weekends other wins included John Spuffard setting a new UK record in Fuel Funny Car, much the same as their methanol burning counterparts. John recorded a 5.288 second run @ 266.57mph. Living just a stone's throw from Santa Pod, John was applauded by his huge following of local fans. The ultimate doorslammer class Pro Modified with their vast supercharged or nitrous injected motors was won by Swedish Roger Johansson who also ran the best ET of 6.397 secs and fastest time of 216.26mph.
The FIA/UEM European Drag Racing Championship now moves to Finland for round two. The Championship returns to Santa Pod on 5-7 September for the spectacular finale of the 2003 series.
