ROMINE'S QUEST FOR THIRD IHRA CHAMPIONSHIP CONTINUES AT BRADENTON
BRADENTON, FLA. (March 23, 1999) -- The 1999 IHRA Snap-on Drag Racing season is less than an event old entering the Amaile Oil Nationals and already Paul Romine and the CARQUEST team knows a third IHRA Snap-on Drag Racing World Championship is not going to come easy
At the season opening Prolong Super Lubricants Winter Nationals in Darlington, S.C., before final eliminations were washed out, Jim Bailey wheeled Doug Herbert's Snap-on Dragster to a 4.67 elapsed time. Meanwhile Don Lampus recorded a 4.74 and Bruce Litton stopped the clocks with a 4.89.
"These guys mean business this year," Romine said. "Herbert's team has been the one to beat since the end of last season and Lampus has always there with consistent runs. Then Steve Smith last week (at the NHRA Gatornationals) went a .68 so he going to be a threat to contend having that kind of performance."
The CARQUEST team led by Clayton Harris showed a preview of their performance at the NHRA Gatornationals with Romine recording a 4.69, and a career-best 307.02. In IHRA competition, Romine has driven to a best 4.72, coming at the 1998 IHRA World Nationals.
"Last season we ran 4.86 to qualify #1 (at the Winter Nationals in Bradenton), but I don't think that will cut it this year for the pole," Romine said. "The Amalie Oil Nationals is going to be a fast and competitive race and I think the fans are going to get their money's worth. I wouldn't be surprised to see some big numbers come up on the board and hopefully they'll be in our lane."
Top Fuel competitors will get one qualifying shot for the IHRA Amalie Oil Nationals Friday, March 26th. They will get two additional qualifying attempts Saturday with final eliminations set for 12 noon Sunday, March 28th.
ESPN2 will provide tape-delayed coverage of the event at a later date.
