Tommy Mauney Reaches Semis At CARQUEST Autumn Nationals
ROCKINGHAM, NC -- If Tommy Mauney wanted to make a good impression on a forthcoming sponsor, he reached his objective at the CARQUEST Autumn Nationals in Rockingham, NC. The two-time Pro Modified champion reached the semi-finals in Pro Modified competition. He dropped a tough match opposite fellow match racer Todd Tutterow.
On Friday, Mauney first showed off his Jeg's Mail Order livery with a 6.4 70 lap in his classic Corvette during the first session. He was the fourth quickest and that proved to be a mark that he couldn't improve on during the second session. Mauney closed the day with a 6.482/217.60, good enough for the 10th.
Mauney made an improvement during the final session with a 6.466/216.86. He went into the final session as the 10th quickest. He uncorked his quickest of the evening with a 6.359/220.42 during the final session. The Jeg's Mail Order-backed, driver ended up as the 6th quickest and met Dale Brinsfield in the first round.
The veteran driver overcame the upset-minded Brinsfield with a 6.447/219.13 in the first round.
That win matched him opposite World Nationals champion Ed Hoover. In a battle of Pro Modified pioneers, Mauney blistered his fellow comrade on the starting line by a 6.440/218 to 6.435/220 margin.
In a battle that resembled a Southeastern Quick Eight battle, Mauney dropped a tough match against Tutterow's 1963 Corvette by a 6.498/216.50 to 6.484/217.49 margin.
Tommy Mauney, winner of the IHRA Amalie Oil Nationals in Bradenton, Fla., plans to continue his championship conquest at the IHRA EXPRESS Auto Parts.Com Nationals in Budds Creek, Md., during the weekend of Oct. 1-3. Mauney, along with each Pro Modified contestant, will be afforded four qualifying runs during the course of the event and the quickest sixteen entries will compete in final eliminations on Sunday.
