The "ROCK" Claims Another. Shannon Jenkins Bows Out in the First Round.
ROCKINGHAM, NC -- Coming into this weekend,IHRA Pro Modified points leader Shannon "The Iceman" Jenkins and his Parsons Brothers/Competition Plus-backed, 1941 Willys were hoping to pad a large point lead. With a first round pairing of Jenkins and the recently unbeatable Ed Hoover, a win for Jenkins was not a given.
With a respectable qualifying time of 6.455 Jenkins was in the 14th spot for the QUICKEST Pro Mod Field In IHRA history, clearly off of his usual pace.
"The Iceman" Jenkins was the second quickest nitrous entry of the first session with a 6.455. He remained consistent, but failed to improve on the prior run with a 6.470/217.44. Hewas the sixth quickest at the end of the day.
Jenkins failed to improve during the third session, but was consistent with a 6.490. He went into the final session as the 7th quickest. He appeared to be on course to hammering out his best lap of the weekend during the final run, but was forced to abort the run with mechanical failure. The Iceman was the 14th quickest qualifier and faced Ed Hoover in the first round.
The prospect of "The Iceman" losing in the first round has proven to be as possible as the Buffalo Bills winning a Super Bowl. But, just like they say in the lottery business, "Hey you never know." Jenkins faced Ed Hoover in the first round and for a rare instance, this seasoned veteran/tuner was beat on performance. Jenkins showed at the line why he earned his moniker, as he left on Hoover. However, he was overpowered at the finish line.
Jenkins losing time of 6.520/199.73 with a reaction of 0.465 was not able to stop the hard charging Ed Hoover who ran 6.424/220.10 coupled with a .471 light.
The "Iceman" and his Shannon Jenkins Motorsports team will continue their bid for the championship at the IHRA EXPRESS Auto Parts.Com in Budd's Creek, Md., October 1-3. Jenkins, along with each Pro Modified contestant will be afforded two qualifying runs on Friday and two on Saturday. Final eliminations are scheduled for Sunday.
