ROCKINGHAM NC - SUMMIT FastNews - With his Top Fuel victory in Sunday's inaugural Carquest Autumn Nationals at Rockingham Dragway, Doug Herbert of Cherryville, N.C., extended to eight the number of consecutive seasons in which he has won at least one race in the IHRA's Snap-on Tools Drag Racing Series. The quickest in every round, Herbert saved his best for last, coaxing his Snap- on Tools Special to 4.702 seconds at 312.06 miles per hour in the final after running 4.750 and 4.740 in the first two rounds. Although the victory extended Herbert's record of having won at least one IHRA race in each of his nine professional seasons, it didn't come without a price. By beating teammate Jim Bailey of Mantua, Ohio, in the final, Herbert ended Bailey's longshot bid for an IHRA series championship. The No. 1 qualifier at 4.698 seconds, Bailey needed to win Sunday's race and the season finale at Shreveport, La., to retain any hope of overtaking points leader Don Lampus of Garland, Texas. "I told everyone we were going racing -- and we did. This speaks for the integrity of the Snap-On Tools Team," said team owner Herbert. "I wouldn't have wanted to win that way (if Herbert hadn't raced him). This is a great two-car team and we showed that to everyone today," added Bailey. Lampus, winner of four IHRA races in only his second professional season, could have clinched the championship Sunday. Instead, he was beaten in the first round by Herbert. He can wrap up the title simply by qualifying for the season-ending Mopar Parts World Finals, Oct. 15-17, at Shreveport, La. Herbert, a four-time former IHRA series champion, has spent most of the 1999 season racing on the rival NHRA pro tour where he has won twice and remains in contention for that association's Winston Championship. The 31-year-old performance parts distributor, making only his second IHRA start this year, shared the winners' circle with Quain Stott of Inman, S.C., Chris Holbrook of Redford, Mich., and Bob Spina of Brentwood, N.Y., who prevailed in Pro Modified, Pro Stock and Nitro Harley Motorcycle, respectively. The win was Stott's first and did not come easily. "It feels real good because we had to earn every round. We had the heads off between every round." Spina's win was the second in his career: "It feels tremendous. Now I've got two 'iron men' (IHRA winner's trophies) and I'm going to name them Heckel and Jeckel." Other winners included Von Smith of Oak Ridge, Tenn., in Funny Car and Neal Parker of Millville, N.J., in Super Eliminator.
