ROCKINGHAM, N.C. - (April 8, 1999) Two-time IHRA Top Fuel World Champion Paul Romine has already accomplished one goal at the IHRA Holley Spring Nationals. He has closed the gap between himself and Snap-on Drag Racing points leader Jim Bailey.
While the CARQUEST dragster knocked down the top qualifying time Friday evening with a 4.747/295.85, points leader Jim Bailey failed to qualify for the event.
"Although the season has just started, it's never too early to begin counting points," said Romine about the 10-race 1999 IHRA Snap-on Drag Racing season. "Bailey's failure to qualify gives us an opportunity to make up some ground on him, but he's just one of a handful of drivers in the points chase, now we have to do our work on Sunday."
In the opening round of final eliminations, set for Sunday at 12 noon, Romine will race Jack Ostrander(#8 5.065/284.90). Two weeks ago, Romine defeated Ostrander in the opening round of eliminations at the Amalie Oil IHRA Nationals in Bradenton, Fla. Romine is 4-0 lifetime against Ostrander in final eliminations.
