For a good part of the weekend, Cannister's switch from the Pro Outlaw dragster to the Camaro Funny Car looked promising. The SmithKline Beecham executive assistant from Clinton, Pa., was nestled among the top 16 qualifiers, who eventually would advance to yesterday's final eliminations, for the first three rounds. In this class, Cannister found a driver must make four solid runs. The bubble would burst with Saturday night's final Funny car qualifying pass. Scott Weney made that last run, and his elapsed time pass of 6.191 seconds knocked Cannister out of yesterday's head-to-head eliminations by .008 seconds. Her best run of 6.1999 ended up 17th quickest. Cannister looked impressive during her first two times behind the wheel of that Camaro on Friday. Taking a conservative approach to Rockingham Dragway's tough quarter-mile, she clocked her first run in 6.269 seconds at 214.72 mph to claim the 10th spot. Cannister was even stronger the next time out with her pass of 6.199 seconds and 222.00 mph to move up a notch to ninth. For her third time down the track during Saturday's first session, she made a solid run, but the numbers weren't quite as good as the previous day. She did have an aggressive 60-foot launch time of .960 seconds in going straight as an arrow for a time of 6.246 seconds and 222.18 mph. Cannister will have nearly three weeks to pick up an extra tenth or two before making the trek to Virginia Motorsports Park in Richmond for the IHRA's AC Delco Nationals tour stop on April 20-22.
