ROCKINGHAM, N.C.-For the last couple of seasons, Bruce Litton has viewed Clay Millican and Paul Romine as the enemy in his battle for the IHRA's Top Fuel championship. Nothing has changed as far as these drivers are concerned since they ranked 1-2 to Litton's third in the points coming into the third annual CARQUEST Autumn Nationals this past weekend.

Litton now has added Louie Allison to that short list.

Two weekends ago, Allison brought a sparkling weekend for Litton in Epping, N.H., to a screeching halt by shocking the enclosed trailer dealer from Indianapolis in the opening round of eliminations.

Litton experienced more of the same heartache in yesterday's first round against Allison. Litton had the upper hand at the starting line, winning the holeshot, .513 seconds to .517, but it was all down hill after that. Allison outran Litton on every part of the track, covering the quarter-mile in an elapsed time of 4.869 seconds at 304.87 mph to the 4.937 and 299.27 for the Littonmobile. The margin of victory in this upset was .064 seconds or about 28 feet.

With all of Litton's successes, Rockingham Dragway has been a mixed bag for the driver of the Wix Filters-Lucas Oil-Spectra 1-sponsored Top Fueler. With the fresh scent of spring in the air, Litton has done well as evidenced by reaching the finals in the season opener. The fall outing, however, often has been the opposite as experienced with the start of qualifying on Friday.

In his opening lap of the trials, Litton smoked the tires and coasted to a 17.577/71.52. The first effort on Saturday hardly produced a reprieve with another smoky effort as he slowed to a 7.318/114.63, despite holding onto the eighth and final spot. In the last chance heat in the evening, Litton put it all together with a sizzling run of 4.778/277.77 to vault all the way into the second spot for the next day's elimination rounds.
