Atchison and Pride Fighting Championship Racing after leading qualifying for 3 Rounds finished in final four.
Toronto, Ontario - This was almost a picture perfect weekend for Rob Atchison and crew as they proved that they have what it takes to be number one. Atchison led the first session of qualifying on Friday to an astounding 5.84 seconds with the number two spot being almost a tenth of a second slower at 5.91. Opting to sit the second session out, Atchison and crew watched with anticipation to see if their number was strong enough to carry them to Saturday. Valiant attempts were made by Cannister, Rector and Brand all of them turning in 5.85 elapsed times. Saturday's midday qualifying session was again in the heat of the day over 100*F, but this did not discourage Atchison as he ran the fastest time of the event at 5.83 seconds. Using strategy, the team stayed close to the back of the field for qualifying. If they didn't need run in order to remain number one then they would save the parts for Sunday, but just before the round was completed Laurie Cannister matched Atchison's 5.83 and bettered it by one-thousandths of a second to put her on the pole. Atchison attempted to regain his position back but ran a slower 5.89 seconds.
"What a roller coaster this race has been as far as qualifying goes. After realizing we could keep the top spot, it was hard to give it up by such a little margin. We have the support of the fans and they have been amazing. This car is ready to race " Smiled Atchison before first round of eliminations.
Atchison's first round of eliminations had him facing Jeff Lancaster also of Canada. Lancaster trying to get the starting line advantage, left too early producing an automatic loss but that didn't stop Atchison from racing to the fastest pass of the round at 5.88 seconds. Quarterfinal action was Atchison against Alcohol Funny Car legend, Larry Dobbs. Dobbs suffered engine damage earlier and was unable to make the call. Atchison turned in a solo pass for the win. Semi-finals had Atchison paired against the current point's leader Jimmy Rector; the action was intense as Rector took the win with a 5.89 seconds to a losing 5.93 seconds.
"We would have liked to win that round and go to the final but we'll have to wait until the next race for that one. I can't say enough about the success we have had this weekend and particularly want to that PRIDE Fighting Championships for their support as well as Erickson Manufacturing and West Coast Transportation who were both in attendance this weekend cheering us on. The team was amazing. My Dad went back to our shop in London Saturday night to repair our supercharger and didn't get back until 5:30 am Sunday. My family and friends couldn't be more dedicated." Beamed Atchison when it was all over.
Along side Pride FC also supporting Atchison Racing is Erickson Manufacturing Ltd., manufacturers of tow straps and tie downs (www.ericksonmfg.com), and West Coast Transportation out of Ontario, Canada.
