DINWIDDIE, VA. - If enthusiasm were equaled with heat, the Astoria, NY.-based Pro Modified racer Steve Cossis could melt all the snow that fell on his hometown yesterday. The CompetitionPlus.com-sponsored Pro Modified driver began his trek on Tuesday to head south to Dinwiddie, Va., for the CompetitionPlus.com Spring Open presented by Lizzard Racing Engines. This will be the drywall business owner's first test since the 2000 season concluded.
Cossis has anxiously awaited this event since it was announced in November.
"The first thing I wanted to do was shake Bobby Bennett's hand for doing this," explained Cossis. "I can't wait to run at Virginia Motorsports Park. I've run there one time before and it was awesome. I'm excited about the future of the Pro Modified class and bringing in tracks like this will certainly showcase what we have to offer."
Cossis will have a lot to offer the Pro Modified program, as he will employ veteran nitrous tuner Shannon Jenkins as a consultant. He's still looking for his first national event victory. Raymond Wilson will return as the crewchief.
"I hope we can start this season off with a positive and doing well at Virginia would be one," explained Cossis. "I think the first few races of a season sets the whole tone for a season. That's why it is important for us to get off to a great start."
He continued, "We are so determined that snow isn't going to stop us. We are different than the Southerners. We don't panic when it comes to snow."
The CompetitionPlus.com Spring Open presented by Lizzard Racing Engines will begin on Thursday and last until Sunday. A special "Chicago Style" eliminations show will be contested on Saturday. Media Day is slated for Friday at 11:30.
This testing event is open to the public and tickets may be purchased at the gate.
