Irwindale, Calif. - - The cancellations and subsequent rescheduling of two of the first two NHRA Summit Series events at Irwindale Dragstrip has thrown the 10-race 2003 Track Championship wide open. "We've still got nine events left," said Dragstrip director Gene Bergstrom as he announced June 1 and August 24 replacement dates for rainouts on March 1 and 15. "Since competitors get points for their best 8 out 10 races, and we've still got nine on the line, anyone can still get in on the action!"
The race schedule will continue with races on Sunday May 4, June 1, June 15, June 29, July 20, July 27, August 17, August 24, and September 7. The four divisions that will compete are Pro Street, Sportsman, Truck/SUV, Pro Bike. Complete rules, regulations and entry fee information for each division is available on the track's website (www.irwindaledragstrip.com <http://www.irwindaledragstrip.com>). All races are held under the strict safety and technical rules of the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA). Gates open for these sunny Sunday events at 8AM, with Tech Inspection at 9AM, Practice at 10, and Eliminations starting at noon.
"It really is a whole new ballgame here, and a great chance for racers to make their bid for the 2003 track championship on the Drag strip." Said Bergstrom. "We're predicting both bright skies and fast times for the Summit Series from here on out!"
Irwindale Speedway and Dragstrip are both located in Irwindale at 500 Speedway Drive, just off the 605 Freeway at Live Oak Avenue. Less than 20 miles from downtown Los Angeles, the motorsports facility operates virtually year-round with racing, filming, tuning, testing, special events, still shoots, and shows keeping the place busy almost 24/7.
